UPS vs USPS

Do you know the three differences between UPS and the United States Postal "Service"? Here they are:

1) UPS provides $100.00 of FREE insurance on every package. You may purchase additional insurance for higher value items. You pay for ANY insurance at the post office.

2) UPS services are GUARANTEED! If the package does not arrive on time [unless weather affected the shipment], even on a ground shipment [except from 12/12 through 12/24 of any year], you get a FULL REFUND of your shipping charges. Try and get a refund from the post office.

3) UPS packages are trackable. The post office charges you for the "privilege" of tracking your package.

The added value of using UPS is evident in these three benefits, so... stop by your local The UPS Store to start saving time and money for all your shipping needs!

All of this may be true, but I've found that with every single package I've had to mail, USPS was always cheaper by a good amount (including all of the above "extras") and much, much faster for the price.

For instance, the last large package I went to mail recently:

-UPS $275 to ship with insurance in about a week from US to HK
-USPS $65 to ship with full insurance and tracking from US to HK in 2 Days

Not only did USPS get it there faster than UPS said they could have, but the price difference was astounding!

My friends that own businesses have been switching to FedEx and USPS for shipping as they are more reliable, much easier to deal with, and cheaper overall. And yes, I said much easier to deal with. As for myself, I've had UPS fail to pick up packages too many times. And that's fantastic when someone expects it on a certain date.

I used to love UPS until the prices went higher than everyone else and their service went down.

@Matt, you have to understand the difference between UPS and the USPS. The USPS offers a lower price because they do not deliver you item to the door in HK. They simply take your money, throw some postage on the package, and put it on a plane. When it arrives in HK, it is turned over to the HK postal system to deliver on their behalf. There is NO guarantee by the USPS. If it gets there in 2 days, great, but I am highly doubtful that it in fact arrived in 2 days. When you say "with full insurance and tracking" I have to go back to the many horror stories that people have told me about shipping internationally through the USPS. If things arrive as planned, all is well. The moment something goes wrong with a shipment, watch out! The USPS will tell you that they will start a tracer to try and find your package. Then after not hearing from them for 2 weeks, you call again and get the same story - the tracer has been placed but the package is not located. Then you say you want to start a claim. They allow you to fill out the claim paperwork. Months and months go by and you still did not get paid. It's a story I have heard many times. With UPS, the package is handled by UPS employees the whole trip, gets through customs on your behalf, and is delivered to the door with free tracking and the first $100 of declared value on each shipment. One bad experience with USPS and you will see the value of dealing with UPS!

As far as not picking up packages, a simple call to the hub manager would have resolved that problem immediately.
