The answer is: sometimes!

Many times, when we receive something that we want to send back, we think nothing of using the original box for the return shipment. This is usually acceptable, but there are things you want to look out for when reusing a corrugated box.

First, make sure it is a shipping box. A box that is rated for shipping contains a round seal called the certification. The seal indicates the testing that the box went through to become certified for shipping.

Second, make sure that the box has no holes in it. Cover any holes with carton sealing tape. Never use masking tape, duct tape, or cellophane (e.g., Scotch) tape for shipping. These tapes do not hold during the shipping process.

Third, make sure there are no "hazardous" markings. These are usually triangular symbols that indicate the presence of hazardous contents that must be specially handled. In the case of Avon products, most of the boxes that are shipped to distributors contain the ORM-D label on the top flap of the box. According to DOT regulations, the ORM-D label MUST be removed before shipping back your Avon returns, or the common carrier will not be able to accept the package. The only carriers permitted to handle hazardous materials containers are those trained in handling them, such as the UPS or FedEx customer counters (i.e., the local "hub" facilities). If you take an ORM-D labeled box to a The UPS Store location, you will have to cut out the ORM-D label yourself and assure the store personnel that there is nothing hazardous being shipped in the container.

Lastly, cover up any old labels that are on the box. Barcodes are used by common carriers' sorting systems, so extraneous barcodes must be covered up. Note that they should NOT be removed. Tearing off old labels ruins the integrity of the corrugate. NEVER peel off old labels; simply cover them with new blank labels or use a marker to black out old barcodes.

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise in southern New Jersey. Weight is an important component of the shipping cost calculation. Weights are usually measured to the hundredth of a pound. Rounding is up from the hundredth of a pound; therefore, a 10.01 pound package is rated at 11 pounds.

The approximate size of the packaging. Measure the length, width, and height of the package to the quarter of an inch. In most cases, round up to the next inch if the dimension you are measuring exceeds the inch marker on your tape measure; therefore, a dimension of 13.25 inches is generally rounded up to 14 inches.

The destination zip code. Knowing the destination zip code helps rate the package since the country is generally broken down into zones by the shipping companies. The further the origin zone is from the destination zone, the more the package will cost to ship.

Commercial versus Residential. It is easier for shipping companies to locate businesses. Businesses generally display their address on the building, whereas many residences do not. Businesses are generally located in the center of town, while residences can be situated out in the "boon docks," or remote areas. Shipping companies generally charge more for residential deliveries than commercial destinations. A home-based business is considered a residence if the owner sleeps at that location. The same holds true for shipping items to a hotel/motel guest. Shipping to a guest classifies the shipment as residential; shipping to the hotel staff (e.g., hotel manager) in the office classifies the shipment as commercial.

How quickly you need the package delivered. Since shipping companies have divided the country, and even the world, into various zones, the guaranteed delivery days and times vary by zone. Be prepared to pay a hefty premium for an overnight delivery to a far-away destination.

There are various on-line tools that can be utilized to estimate the cost of shipping a package. At www.theupsstore.com, www.ups.com, and www.usps.com there are cost calculators that utilize the information detailed above to estimate the cost of shipping your package. You can also utilize the services of your friendly, local The UPS Store location via a quick telephone call. Have the listed information available for a fast estimate for your shipment.

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise in southern New Jersey. This is a common question fielded by The UPS Store employees. The fact is that The UPS Store locations have nothing to do with delivering packages. Their role in the UPS system is to facilitate shipping.

The local hub facility is responsible for delivering packages to the local area. They receive tractor trailer loads of packages to be sorted and loaded onto trucks throughout the night so that when the drivers come in, they can begin their delivery route.

Of course, Air delivery packages have priority. Since they generally have a 10:30 a.m. guaranteed delivery time, these packages have to be delivered first. Since it is easier to find businesses, commercial establishments are the next priority. Businesses generally close by 5:00 p.m., so UPS tries to get these packages delivered between 10:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.. Keep in mind that there is no guaranteed time for delivery of ground packages. If the truck is still driving around at 10:00 p.m. and your package gets delivered that late in the day, your packages is considered to be delivered "on time." Finally, residential deliveries are the lowest priority. They are generally more difficult to find (unless you buy from QVC or HSN every day and you are on a first-name basis with your UPS driver!) since they sometimes have no house number markings. They are also more expensive for the same reason.

The local hub facilities have no listed telephone number in the phone book. When you call information, you are given a telephone number for the The UPS Store nearest to the hub. Most hub facilities do not allow The UPS Store employees to give out the unlisted number. You can always call 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877) for information about your package. Use your local The UPS Store location for expert packaging and outbound shipping services.

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise in southern New Jersey. What are you to do when these limits are exceeded? Why, stop by your local The UPS Store location for a freight quote.

If your package exceeds 165" in length + girth (girth = (width x 2) + (height x 2)), or it exceeds 150 pounds, you will need to ship the item via a freight carrier. The Post Office has even lower limits (70 pounds and 108" in length + girth).

The UPS Store locations have access to several freight vendors. If you call a freight vendor directly, their first question will likely be, "How many rooms of furniture will you be moving"? If you are interested in sending a single item, they will likely refer you to a The UPS Store location. The reason is that with nearly 5,000 The UPS Store locations throughout the country, a freight carrier can pick up one item at this The UPS Store, one item from another store close by, and another piece at another nearby location. By the time they pack a couple of rooms for someone and then stop at some The UPS Store locations, their truck will be full. Therefore, The UPS Store locations can achieve a good pricing structure for you to move single objects via a freight carrier, without having to worry about filling the truck like a consumer would face.

Whether it is one piece or multiple pieces, visit your local The UPS Store location for advice and a quote on the best method of packaging and shipping your oversize items.

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise in southern New Jersey. When it comes to fragile items, it is even more critical that the proper packaging material is used to protect the item.

At a minimum, proper packaging material means a new corrugated box on the outside, bubble wrap around the fragile item, and packing peanuts to fill any void space within the box. You should use a box larger than the size of the item after bubble wrapping it. For example, if the object measures 10"x4"x4" after bubble wrapping it, look for a box at least 14"x8"x8" to allow for 2" of peanuts on all sides to protect the object from anything that might strike the outside of the box.

For items such as dishes, use either small bubble wrap or rolled foam to separate each piece. Lay the foam roll or bubble down with the bubbles facing the dish, place the dish on the wrap, use another layer of wrap above the dish, lay down the next dish, and continue for up to about 8 dishes. Once you have protected the dishes in this manner, use large bubble wrap once around the whole stack.

Stemware, cups, and serving pieces should be individually wrapped with large bubble wrap. This helps to protect the larger pieces from breaking in transit.

On very fragile items, double boxing is recommended. Follow the guidance in number 1 above. Then find the next biggest box that will fit the first box in it and leave room for you to add 2 more inches of peanuts. Build the bottom of the large box, add 2" of peanuts, insert the smaller box, fill the remaining void space with peanuts, and seal the carton.

Remember to use carton sealing tape for all shipping boxes. Use of duct tape, masking tape, or Scotch tape is unacceptable for shipping. The duct tape and masking tape literally melt off of the packages in the very hot processing facilities. Because UPS, as well as the Post Office, has automated sorting facilities with long conveyor belts in the "hubs," your package may be moving along the conveyor belt with packages up to 150 pounds right next to it. If your package gets banged along the way, the paper is subject to being torn. If this continues to happen along the belt, UPS might have a box at the end of the line with no brown paper wrap, and therefore no label either. They will not know where to ship the box and it ends up in the lost and found pile.

People often think that brown paper adds strength to the box. It does not. You might try to wrap a shoe box in brown paper, thinking it will make the trip with that outer protection. See explanation 1 above for why this is not a good idea.

People think that if the box says "Huggie Diapers" on the outside that it will interfere with the sorting and delivery process. The markings on the package are irrelevant to the sorting system. The only important part of the box is the shipping label. As long as there are no other shipping labels (i.e., from the box being shipped previously) on the outside of the box, or any other bar codes, there will not be any issues with sorting and delivering your package. Simply cover up or completely mark out any bar codes on the outside of the box. The UPS Store locations have blank labels that can be used to cover these items.

Items must be in a corrugated box for shipping. If you try to ship in a shoe box, a heavily used box, or any other non-corrugated container, you will likely be offered repackaging service to properly protect your items for shipment. Stop by your local The UPS Store location to have your shipment properly packaged so that it will arrive at its destination intact!

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise in southern New Jersey. Now all you need to do is pack your entire household and determine the best way to get
everything to your new home. Do you pack your items yourself, rent a truck or hire a moving company to do it all?

Below are a few suggestions to help you cope with your big move:

Don'’t be a pack rat. There is no need to pack old, unnecessary, unused items that will clutter your new home. Be merciless! Throw out the plastic swimming pool with the tear you have been meaning to fix. Have a yard sale to get rid of clothes you haven'’t worn in more than a year or old furniture that doesn't match the new decor. Donate books, old movies, kitchen dishes and appliances to a local charity or day care center. Review your receipts and documents to make sure you are only moving what'’s important.

Determine your budget. Moving can be expensive. Determine if you have the time and energy to pack up your entire house or if you can afford to let the experts do it. Compare moving costs by using Web sites like www.moving.org. Many of these types of sites have cost calculators to help you determine which moving option you can afford.

Use proper materials. Don't pack your precious belongings by recycling old, worn-out boxes. Make sure you use sturdy new boxes, quality packing tape (not duct tape or masking tape - they melt in the hot processing facilities), indelible markers for labeling boxes and the proper cushioning material, —like bubble cushioning or foam packing peanuts, —for your breakables. Places like The UPS Store™ or Mail Boxes Etc. not only stock moving supplies, but also provide custom crating for larger items, such as antique furniture, precious artwork or a big-screen television. In fact, these types of pack-and-ship locations can give you shipping quotes (to compare against moving quotes) and even provide mailbox services so your mail and parcel delivery is not interrupted during the move.

Pack correctly. Never exceed a box's maximum weight, which is usually printed on the bottom flap. Use smaller boxes for heavier items such as books, files and kitchen appliances. Large boxes are perfect for lightweight, bulky items such as linens, clothing and lamp shades. Put heavier boxes on the bottom of the truck to ensure the lighter boxes, which sometimes contain fragile items, do not get crushed. And pack a suitcase with all the essentials you'll need (clothing, medications, toiletries, etc.).

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise in southern New Jersey. There are several, including:

The PO Box is only accessible when the Post Office is open, and perhaps an hour before and/or after normal Post Office hours. The Private Mailbox is generally accessible 24 hours a day - you get a key to the front door to come and go as you please (in most cases)!

The PO Box cannot accept any parcels on your behalf. If you receive an overnight letter via UPS, the Post Office cannot sign on your behalf and hold the letter for you; therefore, most common carriers will not accept for shipment any packages addressed to PO Boxes. The UPS Store can act as your Commercial Mail Receiving Agent and can accept parcels on your behalf. The staff will sign for your parcel(s) and then notify you that the parcel is available for pickup. They will usually ask that you sign a log to indicated receipt of the parcel from the store.

A PO Box address is just that - a PO Box. When you rent a Private Mailbox, you get a real street address. You can actually operate a business right out of the store because you have a real street address.

There are other benefits to renting a private mailbox at a The UPS Store location, such as mail forwarding, mail holding, and acceptance of any size parcels. So, visit your local The UPS Store and see how a private mailbox rental might work for you!

Fred Savio is a multiple center owner in southern New Jersey. UPS accepts packages up to 150 pounds each. Anything over 70 pounds requires that you have a special Heavy sticker (barcoded) to indicate to the driver that the package is heavy. You should also have the heavy package tape as an additional warning to the handlers that the package is heavy. Keep in mind that the maximum weight that the Post Office can handle is 70 pounds.

The second concern is the maximum length of one side. The maximum length (i.e., the longest side) that a package can be is 108".

The last issue is the maximum length + girth. The girth is calculated as the width times 2 plus the height times 2. The maximum length + girth for a UPS package is 165", whereas the Post Office can only handle 108". Some examples of the calculation follow:

24"x24"x12" = 24 + (24x2) + (12x2) = 24 + 48 + 24 = 96"; this MAY be shipped via UPS or Post Office

102"x10"x3" = 102 + 20 + 6 = 128"; this MAY be shipped via UPS but NOT the Post Office

40"x40"x40" = 40 + 80 + 80 = 200"; this MAY NOT be shipped via any common carrier; you would need a freight quote from your local The UPS Store to ship this item.

So, if you have any questions about the maximum size and weight limits for a particular carrier, contact your local The UPS Store to determine the best way to ship your item(s).

Fred Savio is the owner of 2 southern New Jersey The UPS Store locations. Well, you can!

Most The UPS Store locations offer a full line of postal products. You can buy stamps without going to the Post Office and waiting in line for a half hour to buy a book of stamps. Keep in mind that The UPS Store locations are franchised stores; therefore, you pay a marked-up rate for stamps and metered mail in order to cover the franchise fees that the owner has to pay to Mail Boxes Etc, the franchisor of The UPS Store locations. It is usually worth the extra cost to not have to stand in line to get stamps or mail a package.

You should also know that UPS is CHEAPER than the Post Office for packages that are 5 pounds and above. When you take into consideration that UPS offers $100.00 of FREE insurance on every package, FREE tracking service, and GUARANTEED delivery for your package, there is really no comparison to the Post Office.

For all of your shipping (or mailing) needs, visit your local The UPS Store location and see what one-stop shopping can save you in gasoline costs and time waiting in line.

by Fred Savio
Fred is a multiple center owner of The UPS Store franchise locations in southern New Jersey. We cannot ship hazardous materials from The UPS Store locations.

The most common markings are ORM-D labels on boxes. ORM stands for "Other Regulated Materials." It is commonly found on AVON product boxes. This is because AVON carries perfume and other flammable items in their product line. Shipping of ORM-D materials back to the shipper is allowed only at the customer counter (i.e., hub) facilities. The personnel at the customer counter are trained in handling hazardous materials. The UPS Store locations may not accept these packages for shipment.

If you are reusing a box that was sent to you, and it has the ORM-D label on the outside of the box, but you are not sending back any hazardous materials, The UPS Store can accept this package if you remove the ORM-D label (without damaging the integrity of the box). The UPS Store personnel may not remove the label for you, per federal regulations.

The following types of items are generally considered hazardous materials and there are restrictions on whether or not they can be shipped:

Explosive Materials (fireworks)

Compressed Gas (cylinders, paint ball CO2 canisters)

Flammable Materials (perfume, alcohol)

Poisonous Materials (chemicals, cleaners, photographic supplies)

Toxic Materials

Infectious Waste (blood)

Radioactive Materials

Corrosive Materials (car batteries)

So, avoid trying to ship anything from the list above. If you are unsure about whether or not something is classified as hazardous materials, visit your local The UPS Store location and discuss the item(s) with a store employee. What happens when your packages does not arrive at its destination or arrives damaged?

If you ship with The UPS Store, you contact the store and the staff will file the claim on your behalf. If you ship at a customer counter or authorized shipping outlet, you will likely have to file the claim yourself. Phone 1-800-PICK-UPS (1-800-742-5877) and speak with a representative to file the claim. Have the following information handy when you call the 800 number or you local The UPS Store (if you shipped with the store):

tracking number (most UPS tracking number start with the number "1" and the letter "Z" and are 18 characters long)

whether the contents are missing or damaged

condition of the damaged items (i.e., shattered, dented, nicked, bent, etc.)

whether or not the damaged items are repairable or replaceable

the value of the damaged or missing items

the telephone number of the recipient

You will be instructed to contact the receiver and have them retain the contents of the package, as well as the packaging material, for five business days. After the fifth business day, the recipient may retain or discard the damaged items. You will have to fax to UPS Claims department a copy of the original invoice for the items, an estimate for repair, or a replacement item. You can go to QVC.COM or HSN.COM or some other appropriate website to find as close a match to the original item as possible, print out this information, and fax it in to the Claims Department.

UPS may decide to visit the recipient and inspect the shipment for proper packaging materials and outer carton. If the inspection reveals that the items were not packaged correctly or an unapproved shipping carton was used, the claim will be denied. Keep in mind that ALL items packed by The UPS Store locations are assumed to have been packed correctly. The few dollars you might save by packaging something yourself might turn into a denied insurance claim if you did not pack sufficiently to meet UPS standards.

So, the safest way to protect your valuables in the shipping process is to have them packed at your local The UPS Store location. Let the packaging experts carefully pack your items to ensure that you will be fully covered in the event there is an insurance claim for the shipment.

Carton Certification

Did you ever notice that circle on the bottom of corrugated boxes? Brown paper is cardinal sin #1 in UPS shipping. The ONLY thing on the outside of a box should be the label that we print in the store with the "ship from" and "ship to" information on it. If you wrap a package in brown paper, and the package goes along the conveyor belt during the sorting process in several hub facilities, it has the potential to be bumping against packages that are up to 150 pounds next to it. All of this bumping tends to tear the brown paper. By the time your package arrives at the end of the assembly line, it has no paper on it and therefore no label. Now we have a box at the end of the line and we have no idea to where it should be shipped.

Q) Should I place string around the box to keep it sealed tightly?

A) NO, NO, NO! Tying packages with string is cardinal sin #2 in UPS shipping. There should be a corrugated box on the outside of the items being shipped and nothing else but the shipping label. Cross out the bar codes on any other labels on the outside of the box (no need to remove them - it hurts the integrity of the corrugate when you pull labels off the box).

Q) Can I use a shirt box or shoe box for shipping?

A) NO, NO, NO! Shirt boxes and shoes boxes, although they fit the shirt or shoes that are inside perfectly, are NOT for shipping. The ONLY type of box for shipping is a corrugated box with a certification seal on the bottom of the box (we'll cover the seal information in a future post).

Q) Can I send wrapped presents?

A) YES and NO. If you package the wrapped presents in a corrugated box, they are fine for shipping. If you bring a wrapped present to The UPS Store for shipping and we offer packaging service to have the item shipped, don't be offended... see answer #1 for an explanation.

Q) Can I ship the product back in the envelope in which it was shipped to me?

A) YES, if you seal the envelope tightly and there are no tears in the envelope, feel free to reuse it.

Q) Doesn't UPS provide FREE supplies for shipping items?

A) YES, but only if you are sending the items via AIR service (Next Day Air or Second Day Air). Free supplies include letter size envelopes, legal size envelopes, bubble mailers, and small, medium, or large boxes.

What is ARS all about?

You may have received a return label when you purchased your item from places like Victoria Secret or Spiegel. These labels have the letters "ARS" printed in the top right corner. That stands for "Authorized Return Service."

These ARS labels indicate a prepaid shipment. The shipper is paying for the return shipment. In most cases, however, you are going to have a partial refund deducted from your account. In the case of Victoria Secret, it is usually $4.95. Is it beneficial to use these ARS labels or just pay for the return shipment yourself? It is normally better to use the ARS label. Shipping rates start at about $5.75, so anything less than that deducted from your refund is better than paying standard rates for shipping the product(s) back.

ARS is very similar to, but not the same as, RS. Return Service is another type of prepaid label. It still means that the company is paying for the return. The differences are transparent to the sender. It has to do with the way the package is billed on the return shipment.

You can always drop these ARS or RS packages off at a The UPS Store location. We receive a small commission for accepting these packages, so we prefer that you use our locations when you have a drop off.

So, visit your local The UPS Store location to learn all about returning products to QVC, HSN, Victoria Secret, Spiegel, or any other company. There are four ways of refusing a UPS shipment.

1) Call 1-800-PICK-UPS and schedule a pickup at your home.

2) Give the package back to YOUR driver (if you see him or her every day). It has to be scanned by YOUR driver in their dyad (computer board they use for your signature and to scan the packages as they are delivered or picked up). Your driver will get it back to the sender.

3) Bring the package to a local UPS hub facility or customer counter. They will handle the return for you.

4) Pay to have the package sent back. You can visit any The UPS Store to arrange for this return.

It may be frustrating to bring a refused package into a The UPS Store location only to hear these four options, but The UPS Store cannot get the package back to your driver. If we take the package, it ends up on your door the very next day.

So, visit your local The UPS Store to handle all of your shipping needs, but use one of the listed tips to get a refused package back to the sender!

I won't be home to receive my UPS shipment. What do I do?

When you know that you will not be home during the time your normal delivery takes place, there are several options.

1) Arrange with a neighbor to sign for the package on your behalf.

2) When the UPS driver tries to deliver and nobody is home to sign, he or she will leave a yellow and brown "Info Notice" sticky note on your door. There will be instructions on the note as to how you can pick up your package.

3) The driver will make 3 delivery attempts before sending the package back to the shipper. If you receive an Info Notice, take action!

4) Have the package redirected to your work location. If you are able to receive packages at work, call the number on the Info Notice and have the package sent to work.

5) Call 1-800-PICK-UPS and have the associate either redirect your package or put your package on HOLD at the local hub facility. They usually have a customer counter that is open until around 6:00 p.m. where you can go after work to retrieve your package. They will hold the package for an additional 5 days to give you time to get to the hub to pick up your package.

6) When you order your product, have the company ship the package with the "Shipper Release" option. This will require the driver to simply drop the package at your door and leave. The driver normally has the choice of obtaining a signature or not; however, with shipper release, the driver has no choice but to leave the package. Understand that Shipper Release releases the shipper, the driver, and UPS of all liability associated with leaving the package at the door. If it gets stolen, there will be no claim paid for the missing product.

7) Rent a private mailbox at your local The UPS Store. We can sign for all of your parcels and call you when they arrive. Pick them up at your leisure!

So, stop by your local The UPS Store to learn more about how to ship and receive packages more efficiently!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://shippinginfo.blogspot.com/2006/05/i-wont-be-home-to-receive-my-ups.html' title='I won't be home to receive my UPS shipment. Additional insurance may be purchased at the time of processing the package.

Visit your local The UPS Store location to properly package, insure and ship your package or documents. Keep in mind that documents and perishables are not insurable, but that $10,000 Rolex watch is. Typically, insurance costs about $1.00 per $100.00 of value OVER the first $100.00 of value (covered by UPS). So, a $10,000 Rolex will cost $99.00 to fully insure for the shipment.

When The UPS Store packages an item for you, it is assumed packed correctly by the insurance carrier. If you pack an item, an inspection might reveal that inadequate packaging material or outer packaging were used. If that is the case, the claim will be denied... Although shipping is our primary business, did you know that you can:

have items packaged? Let the shipping experts at The UPS Store package your items for shipping. Each country sets its own regulations for what can be imported and what documentation is required for customs. Even shipments to Canada and Mexico require customs documentation (what ever happened to NAFTA?). The most common customs documentation may include:

1) commercial invoice - this document details the contents of the package, including a description of the item(s), value, weight, quantity, shipper, and receiver (i.e., "consignee")

2) power of attorney - this document is signed by the shipper to give the shipping company authorization to act as the shipper's broker to get the shipment through customs

Sometimes, additional documentation is required for international shipments. To simplify the process, visit your local The UPS Store. The friendly staff will expedite your shipment to its destination with automated systems to complete most of the paperwork for you!

Keep in mind that shipping internationally with UPS is more expensive than other shipping methods. The value added services offered by UPS include:

UPS acts as the customs broker to get your package through the customs process in the destination country.

UPS flies the package to its destination country on its own fleet of aircraft.

UPS delivers the package right to your receiver's door, in most cases. An agency like the Post Office turns the package over to the mail delivery system in the destination country and hopes that it will be delivered on their behalf.

All UPS packages are trackable, insured for the first $100.00 of value, and guaranteed to be delivered when promised (pending normal customs clearance of the package).

Stop by your local The UPS Store to see how easy it is to ship packages internationally!

How late can I send an overnight envelope?

You can drop off a package late in the afternoon and have it arrive as early as 8:00 a.m. the next morning!

There are drop boxes that can accept overnight envelopes and small packages. If you miss the time on the drop box or you would like a receipt for your drop off package, simply visit your local The UPS Store. There are several factors that contribute to the cost. They are:

1) the size of the package - each package is measured to the quarter of an inch (length, width, and height)

2) the weight of the package - each package is weighed to the hundredth of a pound and rounded up to the next pound (e.g., 4.01 pounds is rounded to 5 pounds)

3) the destination zip code - the distance from the shipping zip code to the destination zip code factors into the cost

4) commercial or residential - it is easier to locate businesses, and therefore less expensive to ship to a business than a residence

5) the value of the contents - insurance costs add to the shipping cost

6) any other added services - e.g., COD, signature required

You can see that in shipping, size does matter! Inches and pounds are the primary factors affecting shipping cost.

With UPS, there are maximums:

The maximum weight is 150 pounds for any given package.

The maximum length plus girth is 165". To calculate girth, start with the longest side. This is considered the length. Add to that length the sum of (2 times the width + 2 times the height). For example, the length plus girth of a 24"x20"x18" box is 24 + (20x2) + (18x2) = 24 + 40 + 36 = 100. Since the total is less than 165" you MAY ship the package in the UPS system.

The maximum length (longest side) is 108".

Do you have make all of these calculations yourself? Of course not! Your local The UPS Store can do it for you. You can get an estimate before you even head to the local The UPS Store by visiting http://www.ups.com and clicking on the Calculate Time and Cost link.

Need shipping supplies?

Where should you go to buy retail shipping supplies? Stock up on those moving boxes as the same time, since they are up to 50% off regular price during the promotion!

UPS vs USPS

Do you know the three differences between UPS and the United States Postal "Service"? Here they are:

1) UPS provides $100.00 of FREE insurance on every package. You may purchase additional insurance for higher value items. You pay for ANY insurance at the post office.

2) UPS services are GUARANTEED! If the package does not arrive on time [unless weather affected the shipment], even on a ground shipment [except from 12/12 through 12/24 of any year], you get a FULL REFUND of your shipping charges. Try and get a refund from the post office.

3) UPS packages are trackable. The post office charges you for the "privilege" of tracking your package.

The added value of using UPS is evident in these three benefits, so... stop by your local The UPS Store to start saving time and money for all your shipping needs!

Shipping ground to Hawaii?
